of stuff that people can come after you with. kind of the backdrop here is that house speaker john boehner has had some hiccups or headaches lately. it started late last year when house republicans struggled over how to deal with the george w. bush tax cuts. the house wanted them all extended for everybody. democrats are never on board. president obama was never going to be on board with the idea. so john boehner struggled in that situation, even coming up with an alternative plan for extending tax breaks for anyone making less than $1 million a year. he had to pull from the courthouse. so that was. a was. the next day, he also -- not the next day. excuse me, on january 1, they came back and finally agreed to raise tax rates for those incomes of people making $400,000 a year. that was a tough bill and proposal for him to put forward to, just because taxes went up at the end of the day. the next day he came back and decided to not have a vote on the sandy relief package. that made house lawmakers angry in the northeast. governor chris christie of new jersey also had some tough words for him

and employment. here to hash it out and what's the truth here, john, moody's chief economist and dan, jane technical strategist director joining me now. i have to start with you, dan, and a couple things here. when we saw friday, the dow was 20 points away friday afternoon from 14,000. we're so close to the mark. a little resistance got in that session. more resistance today. are the bullings -- bulls scared about the economy? >> yeah, i would think they are. consensus now is that we're due for a pull back from the running up too far, too fast. it's possible to take a breather here. looking for a correction between now and the first two weeks of february. i would also just like to point out for the dow and s&p, larger caps, look at what the smaller caps have done, the russ of 2,000, the s&p mid cap, 400, the small cap, 600, these indexes broke out to all time secular highs, brand new highs. very bullish in our opinion, longer term. maybe it's over heated short term, but we like the fact that the small and mid caps are leading the charge against all the other headlines cheryl the short term

hagel. he was asked about some of the opposition. and senator john kerry, designated to be the secretary of state, responded. here's a portion from yesterday's confirmation hearings. [video clip] >> i know chuck hagel. he is a strong, patriotic former senator and he will be a strong secretary of defense. i have dealt with him in a number of areas. he's been ahead of the atlantic council. some of the things -- and of the efforts to color his approach on some of these things don't do justice. host: you and many others are in opposition to his nomination. guest: i've been urging president obama not to nominate chuck hagel for secretary of defense. there are plenty of mainstream and moderate to liberal democrats as well. president obama won the election and is entitled to have john kerry as secretary of defense. we're not making a fuss about that at all. -- secretary of state, rather. chuck hagel is not in the mainstream. i agree with john kerry that chuck hagel was a strong, patriotic former senator, reason to become secretary of defense. his defense of him was pretty lame. he could not say

on this historic day. may all mighty god bless them and our country over the years. it seems like it was john boehner with the flags that flew over the capital during the inaugural ceremony. it seems like during some of the post inaugural address interviews, they did not give a hundred percent embrace. but they seem to feel the president was magnanimous and there was not the bipartisan -- the partisan bickering, at least not today. tomorrow is another day. >> right. we'll see when they start go earning. but the transition of power does matter. the fact that we transition in this way that people are -- i mean, my favorite two shot, so far, my favorite image, is that that included beyoncyonce stand near paul ryan and there was this vision of them together. this is fun. this is kind of american politics and culture, you know, crossing these lines. and will it hold? perhaps not. but for a moment, it is a recognition that we don't have violent military coups in this country. we have a peaceful transition of power. >> you also saw there chairman frank as the reference in terms of his speech where h

in come march 1st. john harwood now with the story. >> maria, republicans gave up one hammer to force negotiations on spending cuts when they agreed to raise the debt limit. now they're wielding another with paul ryan saying on "meet the press" yesterday that republicans are willing to let the spending cuts take effect without any other cuts. >> so where are we right now? i think the sequester is going to happen because that $1.2 trillion in spending cuts we can't lose. don't forget one other thing. we think these sequesters will happen because the democrats have opposed. they offered no alternatives. >> democrats in the white house say they do want other cuts. they want to engage in negotiations with the white house. in fact, jay carney the white house press secretary said today we all agree these cuts will never take effect. we need to identify alternatives. >> these kinds of across the board cuts to both defense and non-defense spending are not supported by virtually anyone in washington. and certainly not the president. and to judge by their many statements along these lines not r
